European Commission and UNHCR, 2011:   For the European Commission and UNHCR, InterWorks designed and facilitated the Essentials in Humanitarian Negotiation workshop in Mae Sot, Thailand. The EHN workshop focused on the skills and techniques of negotiation, applied to situations where humanitarians must use them: negotiating with government interlocutors, non-state and irregular actors (including armed elements), partner agencies, fellow staff members and sometimes beneficiaries. Participants then applied these skills to protection-oriented situations where access, respect for human rights and humanitarian space were at stake. The EHN workshop emphasized techniques of reaching mutually beneficial solutions, such as correctly analyzing negotiation positions, using active listening, inventing options for mutual gain and reducing anger and hostility. The workshop was highly interactive, with approximately half the course time spent negotiating in realistic exercises and simulations.
