The First International Emergency Settlement Conference

University of Wisconsin-Disaster Management Center (UW-DMC), 1996: The First International Emergency Settlements Conference, organized jointly by InterWorks and the UW-DMC with financial support from the Ford Foundation and UNDP was held in Madison, Wisconsin. More than 170 participants from 49 countries, representing intergovernmental organizations, national government departments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and private disaster consultants, met to discuss principles, standards and best practices for providing humanitarian assistance to communities disrupted by human-made, technological or natural disasters and emergencies.
