Building Women’s Capacities for Conflict Analysis & Prevention in West Africa and The Sahel

United Nations System Staff College | May 2019

InterWorks provided workshop design and lead facilitation services to the UN System Staff College (UNSSC) to deliver the Training-of Trainers workshop “Building Women’s Capacities for Conflict Analysis and Prevention in West Africa and the Sahel”.

This project was co-led by UNSSC in close partnership with the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), with collaboration from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC). The event was held at the Koffi Annan International Peace Training Centre in Accra from 13-17 May 2019.

Over 30 participants representing eleven countries in the region were trained in conflict analysis, mediation and gender dimensions of conflict, mainly drawn from the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework and UNOWAS’ Conflict Analysis Handbook. Key themes analyzed included violent extremism, pastoralist/transhumane conflicts, and election related violence.

The workshop forms part of a strong commitment of ECOWAS and UNOWAS to further empower women peacebuilders in West Africa and the Sahel.
