EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Emergency response measures are taken immediately following the occurrence of sudden onset disasters, conflicts that impact civilians and after delayed or neglected attention during a slow-onset disaster when exceptional measures must be taken to rescue survivors and meet their basic needs. Special emergency procedures and authorities may be applied to support human needs, sustain livelihoods and protect property. Agencies that respond to emergencies often require training in the special skills and capacities to be able to launch and sustain emergency operations.

Representative Projects:

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 1990-present:
InterWorks has designed training programs, served as field coordinators and workshop facilitators for UNHCR’s Emergency Management Training Program. Workshops have been delivered in over 50 countries on five continents. This training focuses on preparing staff to assess and respond to refugee emergencies and including refugee protection, contingency planning, technical sectors (emergency health, food and nutrition, water and sanitation, site planning and shelter), logistics, registration and distribution, media relations, security awareness, and interagency coordination.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID), 2002-present:

InterWorks has designed and facilitated a five-day workshop on disaster assessment for the USAID/Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance. This workshop covers the technical topics of health, water and sanitation, nutrition, emergency settlements, agriculture and logistics as well as includes two simulations highlighting the application of these topics and coordinating appropriate emergency response.

Save the Children-Nicaragua, 2002:
InterWorks designed and conducted a workshop and a disaster emergency simulation. In cooperation with Microsoft, the workshop focused on emergency needs assessment using handheld digital technology. The aim of the workshop was to improve the speed of collection, consolidation, and dissemination of hurricane and landslide damage assessment reports.
