| Achieving
true humanitarian coordination has been a major difficulty for the international humanitarian community for the
past 20 years. Interestingly, new developments and evolution
of roles between State actors, Development and Humanitarian
organizations has in some cases made matters worse.
Coordination of efforts in a world of limited resources
is more critical now than ever before.
InterWorks has developed several guidelines, training
sessions, and a distance education course dedicated
to coordination over the past 15 years. Our unique placement
as consultants to UN agencies, Governments, NGOs, and
the Militaries, has provided us with direct insight
into the perspectives and biases each organization brings
to the table when entering an international humanitarian
operation.
Representative
Projects:
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR), 2003:
InterWorks wrote, developed and published UNHCR’s
distance education module on humanitarian coordination.
This distance education resource remains in use
today and has been one of the most sought after
distance education courses offered by UNHCR.
United Nations Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 2000-present:
InterWorks
was involved in developing a new project called
the Emergency Field Coordination Team. This project
engaged all of the partners of the Inter-Agency
Standing Committee involved in humanitarian assistance.
InterWorks collaborated in the development of
a training curriculum, new materials and implementing
a two-week workshop focusing on coordination among
international agencies in emergencies. |
