DISASTER MANAGEMENT & RISK REDUCTION

Disaster management includes not only the operational activities implemented in all of the various stages of a disaster – at all levels – but also the policies and administrative decisions taken in support of these activities.

Risk is the relative degree of probability that a hazardous event will occur. Risk reduction, then, is the application of appropriate techniques and management principles to reduce either the likelihood of an occurrence or its consequences, or both.

InterWorks provides training to organizations to increase both their disaster management capabilities and their ability to reduce risk in communities in which they operate.

Representative Projects:

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) & Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) 1990-2001:
InterWorks provided technical support and training services to UNDP and OCHA in the program design, curriculum and training materials development and program implementation of the United Nations Disaster Management Training Programme (DMTP). We produced 20 training modules for self-study and workshop use, facilitated workshops and worked with UN agencies and governments in the development of disaster management/risk reduction programs.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID), 1998-present:
InterWorks conducts field management team trainings for USAID/Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance to prepare staff for deployment overseas. Presented to their Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART), these five-day workshops cover a range of topics including planning, communications, administration, leadership, media management and exit strategy.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), (2000-2002):
InterWorks designed and conducted a core Emergency Preparedness and Response Training (EPRT) for UNICEF staff to enhance agency capacity to respond to emergencies worldwide.
