Security Management Exercise (SMX) & Security Awareness Training (SAT)

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Oct 2012

InterWorks and UNHCR facilitated a Security Management Exercise (SMX) in Islamabad, Pakistan for staff from all offices in the country from 23-25th October 2012. Security Awareness Trainings (SATs) were also conducted from 12-19 October at all UNHCR offices throughout the country, including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.

The workshops in Islamabad consisted of a three-day SMX (modeled on the SMLP). The security awareness trainings were conducted with national staff from all offices based on needs that were identified locally. The topics included negotiation skills: reducing hostility and defusing tension; road mission planning; driver and vehicle safety; crowds, mobs and safety; anti-surveillance and reducing the risk of carjacking.

The purpose of the SMX is for a UNHCR country team to walk through the UN Security Risk Assessment process step-by-step based on UNHCR’s operations in the specific country and its operating environment. Staff are trained on how to conduct the process and are able to identify specific follow-up activities that are needed in order to enhance the security risk management of their operations.
