SITUATIONAL EMERGENCY TRAINING (SET)

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | May 2021

The online Situational Emergency Training was conducted for UNHCR DRC staff, DRC Government and NGO partners from 17 – 21 May 2021. The workshop was presented in French for a total of twenty-eight participants comprised of UNHCR staff, DRC government counterparts and NGO partners. Trainers and presenters for each session were identified jointly by UNHCR DRC, DESS and the UNHCR Regional Office in Pretoria. All presentations were delivered in French. The event was conducted online via a Zoom web conferencing platform hosted and managed by UNHCR GLDC/EMLU technical support staff.

The overall purpose of this SET was to increase the capacity and functionality of UNHCR staff, DRC government and NGO partners to respond to refugee and IDP emergencies and increase their ability to be deployed to the front line at any time to respond to future emergencies in the DRC. Learning objectives of the training workshop were to enhance the participants’ knowledge and understanding of UNHCR mandate, role, and principles; analyze the types of operational and personal challenges, protection issues, humanitarian needs and risks in a humanitarian emergency; implement a strategy of coordination and communication with other partners including UN agencies, government counterparts, NGOs and the media; and describe the multi-sector standards and indicators of an emergency response e.g. shelter, health, WASH, protection, and the components of CBI and PSEA.

The workshop was presented in French as well as the materials provided. A total of twenty-eight participants attended the online training: 18 UNHCR staff, 5 DRC government counterparts, and 5 NGO partners.
